He Shall Be Like A Tree

PARADISE

“And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2:9

Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the ground. Eve, the first woman, was fashioned out of one of the twelve bones guarding the ruach (breath) of God in Adam.

They were blessed. They did not listen to anything ungodly. They did not act sinfully. They enjoyed a home with God and dwelt with Him day and night. They were like trees planted. In Eden, by streams of water, Adam and Eve were beautiful in their season. They did not get sick or age. Everything was blessed. Psalm 1:1-3.

Humanity’s first home was Paradise on earth (Luke 23:43). It was there God dressed us in flesh, breathed eternal spirit within, and covered us with Love.

FAMILY LEGACY

In Genesis, at the same time, God said it is not good that man should be alone (2:18). We certainly weren’t alone in Eden. Jesus was ever-present and in the midst of eternal Paradise. But who else was there? What if we dwelt with Yahweh, Yeshua, Ruach Hakodesh, heavenly creatures, natural creatures, and a family of angels?

You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden [heart] of God; every precious stone was your covering… You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst [heart], and you sinned… Ezekiel 28: 13-16

We know from scripture that a cunning beast, the serpent was in the garden (Genesis 3:1). We know the serpent spoke to Eve about God’s instructions concerning two trees. We know that ungodly actions followed.

The two trees described in Genesis 2:9 were in the midst of the garden. “In the midst” refers to the center or the core…even the heart. If the two trees were in the heart of the garden, were they in the very heart of God? Our triune God divinely reflects Himself in all things. In that, I wonder if the two trees were not reflections of one another. In other words, what if the Tree of Life, engulfed by glory, had a reflection? What if the reflection of the Tree of Life was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? What if that Christ’s reflection was man?

Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2

If this is true, the serpent, clever as ever, may have outsmarted himself. The enemy’s inspired deception is traditionally understood as an attempt to cause us to believe we weren’t already like God. The serpent incited us to believe that the tree of knowledge of good and evil was something keeping us from the fullness of God. Yet, the serpent lacked understanding. What if God, in His wisdom was acting graciously, was keeping us protected from our greatest enemy, ourselves? God could have kept the serpent out of the garden but He didn’t (His identity is communion). God could have kept the tree of the knowledge of good and evil out of the garden but He didn’t (His identity is Truth). And why not?

God, in perfect love, preserved Himself and His children by using two trees to reflect them. In that, we didn’t yet recognize the Truth or the truth. We didn’t know we were naked. But we saw a tree we desired. We didn’t know we were lacking. But we doubted God’s understanding. Like the beautiful angel Lucifer, the tree of knowledge of good and evil was attractive and enticing, the fruit appeared desirable.

A TRUTH REVEALED

God knew we couldn’t resist ourselves reflected in the tree (even if we didn’t know it was us at the time). The knowledge, or the knowing hidden in the image of the tree was that there was evil in us. In the midst of our soul, at the heart of it, we desired the glory of our reflection, to get to ourselves around God… our own image became more attractive than God’s understanding.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

When consumed, the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil brought a venomous, lethal infusion. After our cannibalistic act of defiance, the covering of divine, eternal life was ripped away as we faced the shocking truth of who we really are. Our inherent desires manifest in death from the beginning.

But weren’t we perfect in the garden? How is it possible that we were not 100% satisfied by God? In His wisdom, Adam and Eve were perfect…but not perfected. Our perfection in Eden was the result of dwelling under the covering of divine Love and resting in the shade of the Tree of Life.

DAY STAR

S0…did the serpent get what he wanted? As I mentioned before, the enemy lacked understanding and bit off more than he could chew. Hidden in the tree was the divine knowledge that created beings, angels and men alike, have the capacity for evil.

The tree contained God’s knowledge of all good and evil (His good the evil present in His creations, both angels and man). If that’s true, did God create evil? No, Perfect Love created beings with free will. He knew of the evil within us, we didn’t. In fact, we have yet to reconcile that truth and burden within us. Thank God for the Grace that came in Christ and saved our souls from ourselves.

At the fall, the serpent got more than he may have wanted. While he likely experienced divisive pleasure at our decision to shatter Love’s covering over us, the enemy’s actions resulted in his own curse. Genesis 3:14 says, “So the Lord God said to the serpent: ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” The enemy did not have the understanding to foresee the curse he prompted on himself and his kind. From the moment of our fall, the enemy also fell.

How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, I will ascent to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high… Isaiah 14:12-13

No longer nourished by heaven he would be cursed to consume dust (the substance of man) and live within the kingdom of death Adam and Eve revealed. As we know, the enemy has explored the full scope of evil within himself and has continued to incite us to do the same.

Perhaps the serpent did know what the tree of the knowledge of good and evil truly was. Perhaps he knew what the consequences of eating its fruit would be. Perhaps he was angry there was not a tree reflecting him. Perhaps he desired his own fruit. Perhaps he knew that the only kingdom he could gain would come through leveraging human weakness.

Reconciling the darkness within is a task only possible by Divine means. As many of us know, believe, and acknowledge, the truth of the way to life is the cross of Christ.

And those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever. Daniel 12:3

In fact, Christ’s last supper is meant to replace our first. Communion replaces the blood and flesh of our own we consumed in the garden and continue to consume every day. Like angels, our spirits are not nourished by our own flesh and blood (dust). This fare only leads to ravenous, perpetually unsatisfied, all-consuming hunger for death.

PERFECTED

The Body of Christ has never been in such a time as this. I write this as an encouragement to my own soul… God is desperate for His creation to eat of the Tree of Life once again, to taste the flesh and drink the blood of the Highest Sacrifice. Once the Body begins to be nourished by Heaven, our souls will be resurrected and we will see the RESTORATION OF ALL THINGS.

In that I will conclude with His inspired Word spoken through Peter. The Morning Star will rise on our hearts. We will have crucified all desires of our flesh. We will know who we are. We will be perfected in Christ.

And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts… 2 Peter 1:9
